An Examination of Strategic Nonprofit Restructuring: A Guide to Restructuring Types, Organizational Assessment, Identification of Partners, Funding Sources and Implementation

While examining the growth of mergers and restructuring in the U.S. nonprofit sector in the beginning of the 21st century, this paper presents nonprofit leaders with organizational assessment tools for determining the appropriateness of collaboration for their organizations. It offers a comprehensive analysis of available research on the topic through review of the different types of and popular reasons for realignment, the common challenges, the funding opportunities and how consultants can help facilitate the process. Specific questions are outlined to guide nonprofit leaders through the first steps of determining their organizations‟ readiness, establishing the type(s) of restructuring that may be best-suited for their organizations and assessing compatibility with potential partners.

An Example of a Public/Private Partnership - Nonprofit Energy Efficiency Program

Since inception, the Colorado Energy Outreach Nonprofit Energy Efficiency Program has completed 53 projects for 36 different organizations; distributed $2.3 million in energy efficiency improvements to nonprofit organizations; saved 1.2 million kWh of electricity; saved 286,000 therms of natural gas; reduced CO2 by 9.2 million lbs; and saved nonprofits an estimated $332,000 a year in energy costs!
