Art of Connection: 100 years of building community

May 27, 2025

The Denver Foundation is celebrating 100 years of our deep connection to the community, and we know that staying connected is what will carry us into the future. As part of our 100th anniversary celebrations, we brought together our donors and nonprofits to celebrate those connections during our Art of Connection event. It was an opportunity to hear each other’s stories, form new connections, and learn more about our robust Denver community.

Mural reveal

We were thrilled to be at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and to partner with them to unveil a mural created by Julia Williams, the Designosaur. The mural speaks to the mission of both of our organizations, honors the museum’s long history in the community and our 100th anniversary, and supports local art.

Julia is a Denver-based artist who finds purpose in making beautiful illustrations that affect and inspire people.

“This concept focuses on butterflies as a symbol of growth and transformation. I was inspired by the butterfly collections on display in the museum, a classic symbol of both science and nature, as well as a reminder of our connection to the environment.

A young boy is inspired and curious, holding a delicate butterfly in his hands. A group of butterflies then ascends into the air, symbolizing community, and culminating in a huge butterfly becoming a space nebula, to symbolize future possibilities and to bring in the connection to science and the museum once again,” explained Julia.

The mural reminds us that by nurturing our communities, we can help create an environment of growth that signals an incredible future together. At The Denver Foundation, we have done that for the past 100 years and will continue to do so as we look toward the next 100 years.

Connecting through stories and music

As we admired the mural throughout the event, we created new connections and strengthened existing ones. Our partners at Longer Tables provided guiding prompts to invite deeper sharing. The questions explored themes around belonging and community, including: “What makes Denver feel like home?”, “Share a recent experience that gave you hope,” and “Who has had a significant impact on your life?” Longer Tables is a nonprofit that brings people from all walks of life together to create connection and belonging through shared meals.

We also enjoyed listening to a live performance from young musicians at El Sistema. El Sistema is a tuition-free, excellence-driven, and opportunity-focused youth orchestra program that develops musical and personal agency, transcends socioeconomics, and strengthens community.

Looking ahead to the next century

Our 100th anniversary is about remembering those who have made incredible contributions to our community and continuing to learn about the people, places, and organizations that make our community thrive today.

We are so grateful to everyone who joined us for our event, Art of Connection, and to our incredible partners for making this celebration possible.

The mural sits on the south side of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. We hope you’ll visit and be reminded of the difference we can create together in our community.

Stay connected for more centennial events throughout the year. We can’t wait to celebrate with you again soon!
