If you’ve been to an event in the last 10 years that was hosted by Latinas, for Latinas, or supporting Latinas in Denver, chances are, you’ve met a member of LatinasGive!
Women who make up LatinasGive! come from all walks of life, and what connects them is a love for their heritage and community.
LatinasGive! is Denver’s first Latina giving circle with a charitable fund at The Denver Foundation.
Their investments support cultural values, promote community strengths, lift up culturally based leadership, defend social justice, and respond to community needs.
Giving circles connect people who donate their money into pooled funds. Together, donors decide which nonprofit organizations or community projects to support. Through the process, donors build strong connections with one another and the community.
There are different ways giving circles give back to the community at The Denver Foundation. We call them the 5 T’s of philanthropy: time, talent, treasure, testimony, and social ties.
While all giving circle members donate money, nearly all give in other ways as well, such as time spent volunteering in their community or serving on the board of an organization. With their deep roots in the community, members also help tie their networks with other members. Most also bring talent for things like relationship-building and connecting, community organizing, and leadership. Members also share and talk about their work and philanthropy. This is one way in which testimony can deepen awareness about ways to give back in communities of color and racial equity efforts. The final T of philanthropy is treasure, the one that aligns with its most common image: giving of monetary donations and valuable assets.
LatinasGive! is one of eight giving circles housed at The Denver Foundation and all of them are a part of a national movement that is democratizing and diversifying philanthropy.
How it started
In 2014, Chrissy Deal and Adrienne Mansanares began imagining ways to come together and positively impact the Latinx community along with other women. This led to the concept of establishing and nurturing a sisterhood who could pool their resources and work collaboratively to determine how to best invest in the community.
Made up of about 100 participating members and 40 annual paying donors who have donated money to the fund, these Latinas have awarded close to $200,000 from their own pockets.
They both went through the Circle of Latina Leadership, a 9-month leadership program that touched on education, identity, political power, among other things. The program was created by Latina powerhouses like Juana Bordas. It was meant to fill a gap they felt in their careers and intended to better prepare the next generation of Latinas coming into leadership roles.
When the concept of giving circles started reaching Denver, Chrissy and Adrienne were both connected with The Denver Foundation. They were curious about how to incorporate this model in an effort to connect our communities with philanthropy.
Chrissy and Adrienne started by inviting other circle sisters to help start LatinasGive!, and later they recruited other women to join them.
“We were making more money, our careers were growing, and we were trying to figure out ways to build on what we learned in the Circle of Latina Leadership,” said Chrissy.
Latinas by nature are philanthropic, they just didn’t feel authentically represented in the way philanthropy was working at the time. Creating LatinasGive! was a way to engage in philanthropy that rang true to who they are and their culture.
“Coming together to talk felt therapeutic,” said Camila Lara, one of the founding members of LatinasGive!. “Our conversations were almost equal parts what we were trying to accomplish and change, and processing our own experiences as Latinas in professional settings.”

Camila is a seasoned philanthropist with 15 years of experience working with different foundations. She is currently a program officer at The Colorado Health Foundation.
“[LatinasGive!] was like entering a space that was familiar from a work standpoint but being able to do it purely from my heart and our collective hearts,” she said.
LatinasGive! was so familiar, Camila encouraged her biological sister and niece to join.
Tish Gonzales, Camila’s sister, has been in the philanthropic sector for a decade.
As a fifth generation Coloradan, Tish felt like she understood the community on a deeper level, she wanted to impact the communities in a better way than she felt like she could do in her professional life. “Just being together and talking about the difference we could make in our communities was like a breath of fresh air,” she said.
LatinasGive! became that opportunity she was looking for, a place to use her deep understanding of the community to invest where people need it most. The best part, she didn’t have to do it alone. The money they raised was done together.
LatinasGive! is more than just a monetary transaction. For Tish, it’s about the organizations they reach.
Some of the nonprofits LatinasGive! supports are Casa De Paz, a safe-haven for immigrants reuniting after traumatic separations by ICE; Latina SafeHouse, a bilingual and culturally sensitive home for Latina survivors of domestic violence and their families; and LAW SCHOOL… Yes We Can, which is the first law-school pipeline program of its kind in Colorado with incredible mentoring opportunities for college students.
LatinasGive! grants range in the amount depending on the needs of the community. “Our grants aren’t huge, but we have been told many times that it’s so valuable to receive a grant from us because it says that we’re behind them,” said Tish.
One of the things that convinced Marisa Kruger to join was how the giving circle supported the other ways emerging leaders could engage in philanthropy. If someone is early in their career, they can donate in other ways, like volunteering their time, or connecting the circle to their professional networks.
“It’s something that offers a lot of flexibility for younger professionals to start to join, and we’ve seen it work really well,” said Marisa.
There’s an opportunity for all levels of connection and involvement, and that’s what Marisa thinks makes LatinasGive! a welcoming environment.
“You know you’re going to know somebody, and they’re going to greet you with a smile, a hug, and call you hermana, no matter what,” she said.
Giving Circles
Collective giving is the fastest-growing form of philanthropy in America right now. A new report from Philanthropy Together finds that the philanthropy practiced by giving circles is very different from the top-down practices of foundations set up by billionaires.
LatinasGive! has put together a process of applying that is so flexible and meets people where they’re at, especially for very small organizations. “Not many foundations or donor-advised funds are able to orchestrate this open, all-access process in such creative ways,” said Camila.
With this level of connectivity, it’s no surprise the number of giving circles across the country has tripled since 2007.
“Understanding philanthropy and thinking of it as something that exists beyond big foundations is truly empowering,” explained Tish. “It’s things we do in the community as Latinas and Chicanas. Giving ourselves to people in everything that we do.”
After 10 years of fundraising and nine years of grant cycles, LatinasGive! proves that anyone can be a philanthropist. If you give whatever you can offer to help others in your community, you already are one.

Cómo empezó
En 2014, Chrissy Deal y Adrienne Mansanares comenzaron a imaginar maneras de impactar positivamente a la comunidad latina junto con otras mujeres. Esto llevó al concepto de establecer una hermandad que pudiera juntar sus recursos para determinar cómo invertir en la comunidad.

Ambas participaron en el Circle of Latina Leadership, por sus siglas en inglés, un programa de liderazgo de 9 meses que tocó temas de educación, identidad, poder político, entre otras cosas. El programa fue creado por lideres comunitarios como Juana Bordas. Estaba destinado a preparar a la próxima generación de latinas que asumirían roles de liderazgo en sus carreras.
Cuando el concepto de círculos de donación comenzó en Denver, Chrissy y Adrienne estaban conectadas con The Denver Foundation. Tenían curiosidad sobre cómo incorporar este modelo con nuestras comunidades y con la filantropía.
Chrissy y Adrienne comenzaron invitando a otras hermanas del círculo a ayudar a iniciar LatinasGive!, y luego reclutaron a otras mujeres para que se unieran a ellas.
“Estábamos ganando más dinero, nuestras carreras estaban creciendo y estábamos tratando de encontrar maneras de aprovechar lo que aprendimos en el Circle of Latina Leadership”, dijo Chrissy.
Latinas por naturaleza son filantrópicas, simplemente no se sentían auténticamente representadas en la forma en que funcionaba la filantropía en ese momento. Creando LatinasGive! fue una forma de participar en la filantropía que sonaba fiel a quiénes son y a su cultura.
“Era terapéutico reunirnos para platicar”, dijo Camila Lara, una de las fundadoras de LatinasGive!. “Nuestras conversaciones eran de lo que estábamos tratando de lograr y lo que estábamos tratando de cambiar. De procesar nuestras propias experiencias como latinas en entornos profesionales”.

Camila es una filántropa con 15 años de experiencia trabajando con diferentes fundaciones. Actualmente es responsable de programas en el Colorado Health Foundation.
“[LatinasGive!] fue como entrar a un espacio que me resultaba familiar desde el punto de vista laboral, pero poder hacerlo desde mi corazón”, dijo ella.
Camila también animó a su hermana y a su sobrina a que se unieran a LatinasGive!
Tish Gonzales, hermana de Camila, lleva una década en el sector filantrópico.
Como residente quinta generación de Colorado, Tish sentía que entendía a la comunidad en un nivel más profundo. Ella quería impactar a la comunidad de una manera mejor a lo que podía hacerlo atreves de su trabajo. “El simple hecho de estar juntos y hablar sobre la diferencia que podemos marcar en nuestras comunidades fue como un soplo de aire fresco”, dijo.
LatinasGive! se convirtió en la oportunidad que estaba esperando, un lugar donde podía utilizar su profundo conocimiento de la comunidad para invertir donde la gente más lo necesita. La mejor parte fue que no tenía que hacerlo sola. El dinero que recaudaron lo hicieron juntas.
LatinasGive! es más que una simple transacción de dinero. Para Tish, se trata de las organizaciones a las que ayudan.
Algunas de las organizaciones sin fines de lucro que LatinasGive! apoya son Casa De Paz, un refugio seguro para inmigrantes que se reúnen después de separaciones traumáticas por parte de ICE; Latina SafeHouse, un hogar bilingüe y culturalmente sensible para latinas sobrevivientes de violencia doméstica y sus familias; y Law School… Yes We Can, que es el primer programa de este tipo en Colorado con increíbles oportunidades de tutoría para estudiantes universitarios.
Las subvenciones de LatinasGive! varían dependiendo de las necesidades de la comunidad. “Nuestras subvenciones no son enormes, pero nos han dicho muchas veces que es muy valioso recibir una subvención nuestra porque demuestra que las apoyamos”, dijo Tish.
Una de las cosas que convenció a Marisa Kruger de unirse a LatinasGive! fue su manera de apoyar otras formas de participar en la filantropía. Si alguien se encuentra al inicio de su carrera, puede donar su tiempo como voluntario o conectar el círculo con sus redes profesionales.
“Es algo que ofrece mucha flexibilidad para que los profesionales más jóvenes comiencen a unirse y hemos visto que funcione muy bien”, dijo Marisa.
Hay oportunidades para todos los niveles de conexión y participación, y eso es lo que Marisa cree que hace que LatinasGive! un ambiente acogedor.
“Sabes que conocerás a alguien y te saludarán con una sonrisa, un abrazo y te llamarán hermana, pase lo que pase”, dijo.
Círculos de donaciones colectiva
Los grupos de donaciones colectiva es la forma de filantropía que más rápido a crecido en Estados Unidos. Un nuevo informe de Philanthropy Together descubre que la filantropía que practican los círculos de donaciones es muy diferente a las prácticas de las fundaciones multimillonarias.
LatinasGive! ha creado un proceso de solicitud muy flexible que se adapta a diferentes necesidades, especialmente para organizaciones muy pequeñas. “No muchas fundaciones son capaces de orquestar este proceso de manera tan creativa”, dijo Camila.
Con este nivel de conectividad, no sorprende que el número de círculos de donaciones en el país se haya triplicado desde 2007.
“Comprender la filantropía y pensar en ella como algo que existe más allá de los millonarios es realmente emprendedor”, explicó Tish. “Son cosas que hacemos en la comunidad como latinas y chicanas”.
Después de 10 años de recaudaciones de fondos y de nueve años de otorgar subvenciones, LatinasGive! a demostrado que cualquiera puede ser filántropo. Si das lo mucho o poquito que puedes ofrecer para ayudar a otros en tu comunidad, ya lo eres.
