We are witnessing unprecedented attacks on the cornerstones of our civil society: higher education, the judiciary and the legal profession, and journalism, including public media. A robust civil society is indispensable for a thriving democracy. The role of public media organizations like NPR and PBS is, therefore, vital to America’s longstanding democratic values. In an age of rampant misinformation online, public media ensures that everyone has access to accurate, unbiased information. Proposals to defund NPR and PBS would silence these voices.
We believe in the freedoms enshrined in the First Amendment, including freedom of the press to provide fair, accurate, unbiased, and nonpartisan news coverage. That’s why we are making a commitment to ensure the dollars we spend are supporting public media in Colorado.
As a nonprofit organization, we have a limited budget to promote our organization and our century of impact, and we are choosing to deploy dollars in support of organizations like Colorado Public Radio and Rocky Mountain PBS.
While this may be a small act relative to our larger work and mission – it is our belief that we should use all the tools available to us to build healthier communities. Protecting access to credible sources of news and information not only sustains our democracy, but also guarantees access to life-saving information our communities rely on in an emergency. There are many ways to make your voice heard and your influence felt, and we hope you’ll join us in exploring different ways to use your power.
Join us! Together with other funders and businesses throughout Colorado, we can make a real difference in support of public and nonprofit media. We invite you to join us and build a stronger, more resilient community by investing in these pillars of our democracy. You can also contact your representatives and ask them to support public media via Protect My Public Media here.
