Why fund scholarships?

Latish Mead

Meet Our Scholars

Latisha Alvarado Mead

Helen M. McLoraine Scholarship for Foster Care & Emancipating Youth

Latisha was eight years old when she was first placed into foster care along with her seven brothers and sisters. Over the next four years, the siblings moved to 11 more foster homes, most often placed apart. Statistics show that less than 2% of foster care youth matriculate to college, and an even smaller percentage complete their studies.

Despite the unimaginable stress of managing school, basketball practice, and working to keep in contact with her siblings, Latisha was accepted to her first-choice college, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs; she later transferred to the University of Colorado Denver. Receiving a scholarship meant that Latisha could pursue her ambitions. It covered the costs of Latisha’s tuition, fees, and books, allowing her to focus on learning and starting her career.

How does it work?

We’ll work with you (and your financial advisor, if you choose) to establish a fund, following these simple steps:

  1. Identify the type of students you would like to assist and determine the best scholarship program option for you.
  2. Complete a governing document that makes your intentions clear.
  3. Name your fund.
  4. Make a gift of cash, appreciated stocks, real estate, or other assets. Alternatively, you can leave a testamentary gift to help students after your lifetime. You will receive a tax deduction at the time the fund is established and when you make additional contributions to the fund.

Please reach out to your relationship manager or contact us if you have any questions.
